5 Fun Game Ideas to Play on Long Journeys

minibus journey

There are some people out there who argue the joy is all found in the journey, not the destination. Clearly those people have never had to suffer a six hour delay on the M1 on a May Bank Holiday weekend! When the journey hits a snag, you’ll need a quick and handy solution to relieve the boredom, especially if you have young children. Therefore, here we’re listing five fun games to play on long journeys!

20 Questions

At some point or another, everyone has played some variation of 20 Questions. All you have to do is think of something – anything – and everyone else has only 20 questions to find out what it is you’re thinking of. You win if nobody can guess the thought in your head, whether it’s an actor, animal, car or place. (The thought by no means has to be limited to these categories, mind!) This game is great for finding out who in your family knows everyone else best!

Roadside Bingo

This game is particularly good for those with younger children. Before setting off on your journey, create a little bingo sheet of things you’re likely to see by the roadside. Include road signs, landmarks, as well as a couple of exciting additions like a police car using its sirens, or perhaps a dog walker. The first to get all of them wins: bingo!

Fortunately-Unfortunately

The premise of this storytelling game is simple and everyone can join in. Taking it in turns, each person will have a chance to contribute a sentence to the story, taking it to weird and wonderful places of their choosing. The only catch is that all sentences must alternate between just two starting words: ‘Fortunately’ and ‘Unfortunately’. For instance:

‘Unfortunately, the ship sank.’ ‘Fortunately, we had a lifeboat.’ ‘Unfortunately, the sharks had a taste for lifeboat.’

See where your own story can take you!

Yellow Car (Banana Game)

A simple counting game can keep your kids preoccupied on longer journeys. Yellow Car simply involves counting the amount of yellow cars you see while out on the road. The one to see the most wins the game!

I Spy

The classic. I Spy is great for encouraging your children to engage with their surroundings. Just make sure not to pick an object that’s too obscure! Your kids will only have fun as long as you can keep changing and taking turns between everyone.
