Our Top Picks: May Bank Holiday Music Festivals 2016
The UK has a booming festival circuit with all kinds of things going on all over the place, and with the arrival of May and the summer sun we all hope it brings there’s no better time to dust off the wellies and camping stoves and dance the weekend away. Here’s our top picks for the best festivals happening in May.
Swingamajig – Birmingham – 1st-2nd
The first bank holiday weekend of the month sees Swingamajig, the classiest festival around, pitching its big top circus tent up once more in the heart of Birmingham. Packed to the rafters with swing dance classes, games, art installations, cabaret, performances, and music aplenty. Headliners Balkan Beatbox are joined by an array of artists and performers to kick May off right.
Radio 1’s Big Weekend – Exeter – 28th-29th
The largest free-ticketed event in Europe is back with Coldplay, Mumford & Sons, Biffy Clyro, Iggy Azalea and Bastille among those gracing the Main and In New Music We Trust stages this year. Located at Powderham Castle, the Big Weekend is sure to be a huge crowd-pleaser yet again.
We Are FSTVL – Upminster, London – 28th-29th
Boasting an awesome venue at the Airfield of Dreams at Damyn’s Hall Aerodome in Upminster, this up-and-coming dance festival has drawn massive headliner acts in the past, and this year’s no different. Fatboy Slim, Steve Angelo, Sigma, and Shy FX are among those you can expect to catch at one of the biggest raves in the country.
Happy Days – Surrey – 28th-29th
For those looking to relive their youth, Happy Days has you sorted. The Surrey-based festival this year has headliners The Human League, The Sugarhill Gang, Marc Almond, and Incognito ready to send you back in time. With each day featuring a variety of different artists from the party-themed Saturday and then the soul & dance Sunday, take back your Happy Days.
HogSozzle – Hertford – 27th-30th
A themed festival for those who like to hang loose and get ridiculous every once in awhile. The weekend is chock-a-block with DJs, electronica, and hip-hop for starters, but there’s also a massive paint fight and free hog roast on the go too. What’s not to love?
Sound City – Liverpool – 28th-29th
In the heart of the Liverpool dockland, Sound City will be blasting out tunes across the Mersey estuary from the likes of indie outfit Catfish and the Bottlemen, The Coral, Circa Waves, and Sleaford Mods. If you can’t make it to any other festival this May to hit off the season, this is the one to get to.
We Luv Festival – Liverpool – 28th-29th
But for those looking for a different vibe there’s a brand new festival for this year, the largest family friendly one in the country as a matter of fact. Example, Dizzie Rascal, and 2015 X-Factor winner Louisa Johnson will be about to pull in the younger crowd while those with a few more years behind them might appreciate some Ocean Colour Scene, UB40 or The Sugarhill Gang. There’ll be something for the whole family this Spring Bank Holiday Weekend in the land of Mersey.
