Spring 2017: 5 Popular UK Destinations for a Weekend Break

top destinations for spring

As the last signs of winter begin to fade (thankfully!) into the distance, throughout the country thousands of us will be making plans for the inevitable spring weekend breaks ahead! But with so many destinations in the country to choose from, how do you settle on where to visit? In this article, we’re listing just five of the most popular UK destinations for a weekend break to help with exactly that problem.

Brownsea Island, Dorset

In Dorset’s Poole Harbour you can find the striking beauty of Brownsea Island. The island is a haven for wildlife, including red squirrels, kingfishers and oystercatchers, all of which burst into life in the springtime. With a visit here, you can enjoy the seaside, the wildlife and sunny spring weather all in one fell swoop!

There are a number of Bed and Breakfasts available throughout the area, but you may also consider hiring a cottage for a true rural experience!

Yorkshire Dales, Yorkshire

The Dales are an awe-inspiring sight no matter what time of year you catch them, but particularly in the spring. The patchwork blanket of blooming colourful crops in the fields – lush greens, dazzling yellows – make for a picturesque setting you simply cannot miss.

The six mile Upper Wharfedale wild walk follows a traditional path through the finest landscapes the Yorkshire Dales has to offer. With historic dry stone walls, flowering meadows coating gentle valley slopes and hillside streams to top it all off, soak up the best of the English springtime. Holiday cottages are widely available, just remember to book early!

Peak District, Derbyshire

In a similar vein, the Peak District also looks spectacular in the spring. There are plenty of scenic villages and towns throughout the national park to enjoy, but we recommend exploring Castleton, Matlock Bath or Bakewell.

In Castleton, you can enjoy the countryside from atop Mam Tor, visit the depths of the Blue John Cavern or play the knight at Peveril Castle.

On sunny Saturdays you can expect a horde of motorbikes to descend on Matlock Bath, but if that isn’t your gig you can take the romantic (and slightly dizzying) Lover’s Walk along the cliffs above the River Derwent. Take the kids to Gulliver’s Kingdom theme park or even to the top of the Heights of Abraham!

And a trip to Bakewell is worth it just to taste a proper, original Bakewell tart!

Wallington Estate, Northumberland

For phenomenal lakes, ancient woodland and pristine gardens, look no further than Wallington Estate. The estate is a place of discovery, great for kids of all ages! Here, you and your family can reconnect with nature: hunt for the first butterflies of the season and newly hatched tadpoles swimming in the lakes, or simply marvel at the innocence of the lambs frolicing in the fields!

Tattershall Castle, Lincolnshire

A stay in Tattershall will allow you to visit the elegant Tattershall Castle. From the battlements, you can enjoy an unrivalled view of the Lincolnshire countryside and spy on the nesting rooks around the castle from up on high. There are also a variety of events for all the family, too! These include a Cadbury Egg Hunt, Knights and Princesses Day and a Medieval Archery Weekend.
