Tips for making a long bus journey fun

A long bus journey can drag and be a drain for both adults and children. No one likes to be bored and it can feel uncomfortable to sit for hours with little to do. Below are our lists for kids and adults on how to turn your long bus journey into a fun and relaxing ride.

Adults

Entertainment – As technology gets better you have a range of devices to keep yourself occupied. Take music on an MP3 player or take your ipad so you can browse the web or play games, just don’t forget headphones. Failing that you can go old school and take a book or a crossword to occupy your mind, time will fly this way.

Relax – It might seem a simple suggestion but why not lean back and look out of the window, if you aren’t travel sick then you’ll get to see different sights and the countryside scenery can be particularly relaxing.

Talk to friends – If you’re riding with friends or family you can make conversation, you’ll be surprised how much time goes by during a simple natter. If you’re not with friends and family you could try talking to a fellow passenger – provided you don’t disturb or annoy them – others you engage in conversation with might be just as glad to pass the time as you.

Sleep – On a long bus journey you might be missing out on vital sleep, whether you got up early or are travelling late at night this is a perfect opportunity to get 40 winks. If you can’t sleep upright then try to cushion your head lower down with a rolled up jumper or coat.

Kids

I-spy – This is a classic and self-explanatory game which has kept children occupied on many a journey. You can play with them or let them play with other children if there are any. It engages their visual senses and can increase their astuteness.

Coach Bingo – Prepare this game before you leave, come up with 10 things you’re likely to see on a journey both inside and outside the coach and get the children to cross them off the list as they see them on the journey. The first to find all the items on the list wins. Their attention will be occupied and their minds stimulated in a game.

20 Questions – An oldie but a goodie, this simple game involves a series of questions for a child to guess an object or celebrity/cartoon character you’re thinking of. This works with multiple players which adds to the excitement of asking the most direct questions.

Colouring or drawing – As long as they aren’t using wax crayons or felt tips you can let the kids doodle away. A colouring book will reduce mess and give them a sense of completion when colouring in a picture.

On top of games and entertainment to pass the time you will also need to ensure that you have packed supplies. If you’re allowed food and drink then avoid messy or smelly items, take a blanket in case you get cold and ensure that you have plenty of tissues to mop up runny noses. There is nothing worse than getting onto the M1 for a long journey to discover you haven’t prepared and planned ahead.
